Razor Electric Dune Buggy Review

Razor Dune Buggy Top Speed

Capable of speed that gets up to 9 or 10 mph, this dune buggy runs well on bumpy ground or on flat surfaces as well. And topping out at 10 mph means this will run plenty fast enough for your kid without you having to worry too much about their safety. There’s even a seat belt restraint, a side roll cage, a safety flag, and rear brake disks so more cautious parents can rest assured they’ll be secured in.

Even though this runs at a relatively low top speed, we would advise you to ensure the best protection of your child by wearing a safety helmet when driving or riding in the dune buggy. A bike or even a scooter helmet will be more than sufficient to protect the most vulnerable parts.

Typically this dune buggy will run for about 45 minutes before the battery needs to be recharged, which should be more than enough time for your child to have a good run out in it. The one downside is that, unlike some other Razor electric vehicles, the battery charging time is about 12 hours. The top speed of 9 mph is fast enough to provide a very fun and enjoyable ride. It is not as fast as the Razor Go Kart or Drifter Kart (both 12 mph), but you probably don’t want as much speed when going off-road in any event. The Dune Buggy comes with a variable speed hand-operated throttle that allows the driver to have a far greater degree of control, enabling them to speed up on the straights and slow down on the corners and deliver a far better simulation of “real driving” than a simple single speed throttle mechanism.

The powerful and impressive 350W high torque motor of the Dune Buggy is capable of getting up to top speed pretty quickly. There’s a pretty good running time of 45 minutes between battery charges. If you are spending more than $300 on an electric vehicle for your child, you want it to be built solid and capable of lasting a long time. Upgrading Your Razor Dune Buggy

Maybe you’re thinking about modifying your Razor Dune Buggy to go up to 10 to 20 mph. How can this be accomplished? The dune buggy’s top speed could potentially be doubled by first removing the jackshaft and running a single chain from the motor to the axle. This would take positioning the motor over a little and putting in a longer chain. Because of the amount of air resistance at 18 mph, the dune buggy motor might be more heavily loaded.

If the original motor cannot handle the gear increase, then you could try installing a larger 24 volt 500 watt motor and controller in place of the original 350 watt motor and controller. Another way to speed up the Razor Dune Buggy is to increase the battery pack, controller, and charger from 24 volts to 36 volts and leave the motor, chains, and sprockets alone.

This type of modification will increase the RPM and horsepower of the original 24 volt 350 watt motor, resulting in a 50% increase at top speed – however, that only takes the top speed up to around 12.5 mph. But don’t fret – there are several other options for achieving this goal.

If your dune buggy is primarily being ridden on flat ground, try starting with removing the jackshaft (save it so it can be used again if desired), moving the motor over to align its sprocket with the axle sprocket, then install a chain from one sprocket to the other. After that, test drive the dune buggy to see how it runs. If there’s any overheating, then try upgrading them from 350 watts to 500 watts.
