Sunglasses For Women Buyer’s Guide

What are Polarized Sunglasses?

Polarized sunglasses are a special type of sunglasses designed to minimize glare from reflective surfaces such as glass, water, or snow. Glare can dazzle you and distort colors, making it harder to tell the difference between objects and confusing you, causing difficulties with properly perceiving your surroundings. Polarization reduces the effects of glare by filtering out light that passes through in a specific direction.

In general, polarized lenses allow vertical light to pass through, such as the light of the sun, but prevent horizontal light from entering your eyes, such as the light that reflects from objects in front of you. This reduces glare significantly, making it much easier to see when surrounded by reflective surfaces. Polarized sunglasses allow for true perception of natural colors, improve the comfort of your eyes, reduce eye strain significantly, and help to improve the contrast and visual clarity of your surroundings as you look around.

Polarized lenses are the best choice for improving vision and boosting safety when exploring outside in the sun, but there are a number of minor issues that you should be aware of. Certain neurological conditions can cause problems with perceiving polarized light properly, causing dizziness or strange vision. If you experience this, you’re going to want tinted lenses instead of polarized lenses.

Polarized lenses can also cause some issues with reading screens, as some screens (particularly liquid crystal displays) can be polarized in the wrong direction, meaning that the lenses of your polarized sunglasses for women can interfere with the screen, making it hard to read clearly.

When were Sunglasses Invented?

The history of sunglasses is long and varied, with evidence of protective eye coverings dating back to prehistoric Inuit peoples. These glasses were shades made from walrus ivory, designed to protect the eyes from the glare of the sun reflecting from snow. True sunglasses, however, with translucent tinted lenses, seem to have been used as far back as ancient Rome; the 1st century emperor Nero watched gladiatorial fights through polished gemstones.

Use of glass-like substances came far later; in 12th century China, sunglasses made from flat sheets of smoky quartz stone were used. These offered no protection from UV rays or vision correction but provided a reasonable level of protection from glare. In the west, experimentation with tinted lenses in spectacles began with James Ayscough in the 1750s. These green and blue glass lenses were designed to correct specific vision impairments and had no concern with protection from sunlight.

By the 19th century, yellow and brown tinted spectacles were prescribed to syphilis patients as sun protection, as sensitivity to bright lights is one of the major symptoms of the disease. Modern sunglasses became more popular in the early 1900s, spreading across the west and becoming exceptionally popular among movie stars in Hollywood. By 1929, sunglasses were a fashion accessory as well as a medical feature, and Sam Foster introduced commercial sunglasses to the people of America.

Foster made sunglasses from cheap celluloid and sold them on the Atlantic City, New Jersey boardwalk under the name Foster Grant. These cheap sunglasses were enormously successful, and by 1930 they were available across the USA for sun protection. Polarized sunglasses were invented soon after, in 1936, made with Edwin Land’s patented Polaroid filter. This type of sunglasses became popular during World War II when Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses were invented to protect pilots from bright sunlight.

These polarized sunglasses became immensely popular with celebrities and the general public as soon as they became commercially available to all in 1937, and are still among the most popular types of sunglasses available today.

How to Remove Scratches From Sunglasses?

Many methods for removing scratches from sunglasses are available on the internet, but very few of them actually work. The majority of simple home fixes for scratched sunglasses will have no benefit for the surface of your sunglasses, or may even cause more damage to the lenses, defeating the point of the method! Most of these may look like they fix the scratch, but in the process they remove the protective coating from the lens, reducing or eliminating the UV protection benefits of your sunglasses and posing a risk to your health and vision.

If the scratches are very small, there’s one method that can work reasonably well, but any larger scratches are impossible to fix without damaging your sunglasses, requiring instead that you replace the lenses on your sunglasses. If they’re small scratches, though, try this. First, wipe the lenses of your sunglasses clean with a microfiber cloth to remove any dust or dirt on the surface. Then, squeeze a small quantity of toothpaste onto your fingertip.

Make sure you use a non-abrasive, non-whitening, non-gel toothpaste, as other types can cause damage to your sunglasses. Spread this toothpaste across the lens of your sunglasses in a circular motion, rubbing it gently into the glass for about five minutes. Rinse this off with warm water, and dry the lenses with a cotton ball. If this hasn’t made any visible difference, then your scratch is probably too large to fix using this method, and any further attempts to remove it will just damage the protective coating of your sunglasses.

Expert Tip

If you’re trying to work out whether a pair of sunglasses feature polarized lenses or not, simply take two pairs and hold them up with one rotated at 90 degrees to the other. If the combined lenses look dark and hard to see through, then you’ve got polarized sunglasses!

Did you know?

Fake sunglasses are often sold as expensive brands. It’s important to avoid these, as they often provide little to no protection from UV light and can damage your eyes severely if worn instead of genuine sunglasses with real eye protection benefits!
