Special Features

The Gup-C has a see-through bottom and a detachable towline to pull the whale to safety. The whale has spots on its head that change color in warm water (similar to the color-changing shark found in the Gup-B Octonauts playset). It also squirts water from its mouth.

This is one of the few Octonaut playsets that doesn’t feature an underwater Gup. The Gup-H is actually a rescue helicopter flown by Captain Barnacles. Your child can use it to rescue a small frog in a bucket attached to the helicopter by a string.

Recommended Age

This is another one of those toys recommended for 36-month-olds to 6-year-olds. Again, kids any older than 6 years old might think of the toy as too “childish” for them!

Pieces

This set has 3 pieces: there’s Captain Barnacles (in an aviation suit), the Gup-H with a rescue bucket attached, and a rescuable frog.

Special Features

The propeller on the Gup-H lowers the rescue basket on a string. The crank on the side spins the blades and lifts the bucket. The legs under the vehicle are foldable.

This Octonauts toy set is made up of 3 construction vehicles (that combine into one large vehicle) driven by 3 Octonauts. There are also a few repair tools and other items.

Recommended Age

This toy is for kids 36 months old to 7 years old. The ability to combine the vehicles together makes it intriguing enough for older kids as well. There are some very small pieces that would be choking hazards for kids under 36 months.

Pieces

There are about 15 pieces in this set. There’s Kwazii, Captain Barnacles, and Shellington, with a repair vehicle for each of them. There are also several repair pieces for the Octonauts to hold, and 2 masks they can wear. It’s important to note that an Octopod does not come with this set! You’d have to look for a Fisher-Price Octonauts Octopod Playset to go with your Fix it Crew.

The Gup-S is the narwhal-inspired vehicle used in polar rescue missions. Kids will have fun transforming the vehicle into its smaller parts: the Octo-Sled and the Octo-Shuttle!

Recommended Age

The Polar Exploration Vehicle is for kids 36 months old to 7-years-old. However, it’s also a lot of fun for older kids who want to act out their own rescue missions.

Pieces

There are over 5 pieces, including a Barnacles figure (in a hooded parka), a rescuable creature trapped in ice, 2 rescue tools, and the Gup-S that breaks down into 2 separate Octonaut Gup toys.

Special Features

The Gup-S can be broken down into 2 new Octonaut vehicles! The front is the Octo-Sled, and the back is the Octo-Shuttle. The interior of the Gup-S has lights on the floor, audio phrases from the crew, and a little rescue tank to hold creatures in. The treads on the bottom of the vehicle are retractable. Because of the battery-powered lights and audio, it’s not a good idea to put this toy in a bathtub.

  • Gup-S (with Octo-Sled and Octo-Shuttle parts)
  • Gup-S has lights and sounds
Recommended Age

Buyer’s Guide

Octonauts everywhere! What’s an Octonauts buyer to do? We’ve made it easy to buy Octonauts with the buyer’s guide below. For each toy, we’ve answered what age range is most appropriate, matching up kids from ages 36 months and up with the toys they’ll find most engaging. We’ve also boiled down how many pieces each toy set comes with and what exactly they are. Lastly, we’ve explained all those special features each toy comes with, including waterproofing, lights and sounds, moving parts, and more.

Recommended Age

The 10 products we listed have only two manufacturer recommended ages. The most common recommendation is a range of 36-months-old to 7-years-old. This age range is found with 7 of our 10 products. The other age range is for kids 36 months to 6 years old. It doesn’t seem like a big difference, but when you take a look at the 3 “6-year-old” products, you’ll see that these are very simple toys with not a lot of pieces. Kids somewhat older than 6 years old are more likely to reject these toys as being too easy or too babyish.

octonauts-image-2

The toys for 36-month-olds to 7-year-olds are much more complicated, with lights, sounds, and lots more parts. Obviously, 8-year-olds and kids even older than that can have a blast with these. So 36-month-olds can potentially be happy with whatever toy you buy for them, but a kid 7 years or older might not like the simpler toys. (The three toys on our list that are for the youngest audience are: the Fisher-Price Octonauts Gup B Playset, the Octonauts Gup C & Shellington Playset, and the Octonauts Gup-H & Barnacles Playset.)

Here’s a small warning about small children and even smaller pieces! There are several toys for Octonauts fans that have tiny parts that present a choking hazard. For kids under 36-months-old, you can take away the tiny “creature” pieces that come with a lot of these toys. The Gup vehicles and character figures are large enough to pose no risk of getting stuck in a child’s mouth or swallowed.

Pieces

The number of pieces that each set has can tell a parent a lot. If a set comes with only 4 pieces in it (like the Fisher-Price Octonauts Gup B Playset), it’s better suited for a very small child who doesn’t need a lot of pieces to have fun. On the other hand, a set with over a dozen pieces (like the Fisher-Price Octonauts Octo Fix it Crew set) is enough to keep an older child entertained for a long time. Of course, all this depends on your child’s attention span, so you’ll have to play things by ear.

In the Octonauts toy review above, we also told you what types of pieces were in each set. There are Gup vehicles, whole Octopods, character figurines, and various creatures ready for rescue. We called each character by name so you don’t get in trouble by buying another Captain Barnacles figure when the child you’re buying for is a huge Kwazii fan! The same goes for the Gup vehicles.

It would be a waste of money for you to have 2 identical Gup-A’s and not one Gup-B. If you don’t live with the child, ask their parents if they already have similar toys so you can avoid getting duplicates!

Special Features

The “special features” of each toy is all about the fun extras a child will love. There’s a color-changing shark in the Fisher-Price Octonauts Gup B Playset. Similarly, the Octonauts Gup C & Shellington Playset has a color-changing, water-spouting whale. The Octopods in the Fisher-Price Octonauts Megapack and the Octonauts Octopod Shark Adventure Playset light up and play audio spoken by the Octonauts in the show. The Octonauts Gup-S Polar Exploration Vehicle has light-up floors.

There are some fun buttons and cranks to be played with on a lot of the Gup vehicles. The Gup-A found in the Fisher-Price Octonauts Megapack has a wind-up propeller. The other Gup-A (from the Fisher-Price Octonauts Gup-A Deluxe Playset) is much bigger, has a glow-in-the-dark antenna, and a rescue basket to transport items between the vehicle’s 2 floors. Note that the first Gup-A mentioned wouldn’t be waterproof (due to its battery-operated lights and sounds), but the 2nd, larger, Gup-A would be waterproof since it has no batteries!

There are Gups that have wind-up propellers, rescue towlines, propellers that spin to lower and lift rescue buckets, and more. Details like these can keep a child’s imagination engaged for a very long time. As we mentioned briefly, one important note about Octonauts toys that require batteries is that it’s best to keep them away from water. The Octonauts Gup-Q Undersea Explorer requires batteries, and the manufacturer claims that it’s totally waterproof and safe for bath time.

octonauts-image-1

However, multiple parents have come forward to say that the lights stopped working after bath time. Two parents told stories about the batteries becoming corroded! So if your toy has batteries, don’t let a child submerge it in water, just to be on the safe side. The other vehicle that has batteries is the Fisher-Price Octonauts Gup-S Polar Exploration Vehicle.

It has lights in it, so they’d likely stop working at bath time as well. The only other battery-powered piece we’ve listed would be an Octonauts Octopod toy, which wouldn’t be brought into the bathtub in the first place.

Conclusion

There are plenty of questions to be asked before you make your final purchase. Is the child you’re buying for young enough that they still play with toys in the bath? A waterproof Gup toy would be great for them. Are they a bit old for bath time fun? In that case, look for the fancy toys that have lights, sounds, and other cool features to keep their attention. Of course, really little kids will be fascinated by the lights and sounds too. Just make sure that the bathtub is strictly off limits in these cases!

octonauts-image-5

You can always watch Octonaut toys videos to see the toys being unboxed and played with. This will make it clear how small the pieces are (important if you’re buying for a very young child who might put something small in their mouth). All you have to do is google something like “Octonauts toys videos” or “unboxing Octonaut toy videos.” The best thing you can do before you buy is to find out what the child you’re buying for wants.

Is their favorite character Kwazii or maybe Captain Barnacles? Does this child already own an Octopod toy? Do they want a Gup-A, a Gup-B, or any other Gup vehicle? (Those Gup names can be easy to mix up, so consult an online Octonauts Gups list!) If it’s convenient, watching Octonauts videos with the future gift recipient can give you ideas for what toy they’ll love the most.

Expert Tip

When in doubt, don’t put that toy in water! If it has batteries, it’s not impossible for them to get damaged in water (even when the manufacturer claims the toy’s waterproofness). Look at the online reviews on these toys, just to be safe.
