Cordless Stick Vacuum Buyer’s Guide

Type of Vacuum

It can be really confusing when choosing which vacuum you want to buy. You should always pick your vacuum based on how you’re going to use it, as opposed to looking for the best and biggest vacuum you can find. For example, if you have a home with lots of stairs, laminate or tile floors a canister can be easy. But if you’re looking for quick individual tasks to clean like spilled cereal, we would definitely recommend a stick vacuum would be better. To help you think about whether you would need a canister, upright or a stick vacuum more we’ve compiled the pros and cons of these vacuums in the below.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly vacuum with a wider cleaning path and hoping to deep clean carpets, we suggest you chose an upright vacuum. But be careful when considering an upright as they are often quite heavy and weight up to 20lbs or more. If you’re looking to clean bare floors and use additional attachments for upholstery and crevices etc. you should look into purchasing a canister vacuum. Canister vacuums are also usually less noisy than other models on the market.

If you’re short on space for storage, unfortunately, this vacuum won’t be for you, but you will be able to reach the corners in your home thanks to the hose and wands that often come with such vacuums. Stick Vacuums are great thinner models of upright vacuums thanks to their tall bodies and powerhead vacuums.

They are often battery-powered. They’re a tremendous go-to vacuum if you need to vacuum up your life’s mess quickly. The only downside of stick vacuums is that they aren’t as well suited for large surface areas as their dirt capacity is typically smaller than others vacuum.

Stick Vacuums in Detail

As we’ve briefly covered vacuums are great for the little jobs you have around the home, but they aren’t designed for deep cleaning. But their inability to deep clean carpets etc. is what makes them great for sucking up than a thin layer of dust, a fur ball, some spilled rice or cereal. In minutes your stick vacuum will go from scruffy to clean! The design of a stick vacuum is super simple and versatile meaning you’ll not have to struggle for hours learning how to use your new vacuum. You’ll be able to use your new stick vacuum on a variety of corners and crevices.

Stick vacuums still also pack a mighty punch in their suction while remaining lightweight so you’ll be able to whip it out and take it to where ever you find a mess in your household. Due to the slim and lightweight design of these vacuums as well, it’s really easy to vacuum the gaps under the furniture. And when you’re finished, you can slip them away in a small storage space anywhere, with some stick vacuums even folding down to give you even more storage space.

When it comes to emptying a stick vacuum or cleaning it out, the process is often very easy thanks to the removable bin that comes with these models. All you need to do is detach and empty the dust and debris that the vacuums collected. When it comes to how long it will take before you have to empty the bin, this will all depend on what size dust bin your vacuum has. If you’re going to be looking for a vacuum that will help you get around a larger home, you should definitely pay attention to the size of the bin.

You’ll be happy to know if you or any of your household suffer from allergies that most of the stick vacuums come with a HEPA-certified filter which means it cleans your home’s air of 99.9% of dust particles and allergens. However great HEPA filters are, unlike bagged vacuums some particles will still be released into the air when you empty our bin. Therefore, these may not be suitable if you have allergies yourself and can’t come into contact with them.

But if you have mild allergies, or if someone else in your house does and you really need a stick vacuum you shouldn’t let them empty the bin. Stick vacuums are already quite small and slim and therefore, make great vacuums for getting into your crevices. But if cleaning crevices is the main reason you’re buying a stick vacuum, you should check what attachments and tools it comes with, and these can really help your cleaning game!

Some stick models come with dusting brushes and tools specialized for reaching into the tiniest of crevices. And some even turn into a handheld vacuum with the right attachments which means you can use it on the stairs, ceilings and pretty much anything else you want.

How to Efficiently Clean your Home

We know this may sound condescending, telling you how to use a vacuum but a lot of people don’t use their household appliances as efficiently as they could be. The most obvious is to make sure you’ve decluttered your floor first, and if you’re really wanting a deep clean, you should dust and disinfect the surfaces beforehand. You should always try not wear shoes as much around your home. We know this sounds a bit pedantic but wearing shoes indoors brings in a lot of dirt and can really shorten the life span of your lovely floors.

Unless you have really powerful suction on your vacuum, believe it or not, you should actually vacuum over surfaces several times. Especially if you want a deep clean, or own pets or haven’t got the time to vacuum as often as you would like. It only takes one conversation with a pet owner and to know they would agree with us on this one as pet hairs can really embed themselves into the smallest of carpet fibers. If you’re really struggling to find the time to clean your home, you should make sure you create a cleaning schedule.

We recommend vacuuming at least two times a week and more if you own pets or have any high traffic areas. You should always remove the debris out your canister when it is full otherwise you will have a nightmare trying to clean your household. It isn’t necessary to do this every-time you vacuum, but if it is nearly full, we would suggest that you empty it before you start vacuuming. If you can clean out your canisters, you should. Now and again when cleaning your home, you should also move your furniture around.

Furniture which is left in one place for too long means you’ll miss lots of dirt that is under and around it. We would recommend moving furniture at least once a week if you can. One of our most important cleaning tips when it comes to using your vacuum is to always make sure it is on the right setting! If you’re vacuuming on the wrong setting, you’re pretty much wasting your time.

For example, if you want to go from cleaning any type of shaggy carpets and then go on a hard floor surface, you will need to adjust your settings. Not only is this important for making sure you’ve cleaned the floor property, but you also need to change settings because you can damage your floor with the wrong setting.

Expert Tip

If you have a HEPA filter vacuum you should leave it on when you’ve finished cleaning. As we’ve discussed HEPA filters are great for cleaning your home of allergens and dirt from the air. We found out off experts that if you’re looking to really clean up your home’s air, you should leave your HEPA vacuum running once you’ve stopped cleaning. This exercise will help eliminate any stubborn dust particles from our home, and it will keep your vacuum running cleaner for longer.

Did you know?

That bagless vacuums like the stick model exist thanks to James Dyson who invented the bagless cleaner in 1978!
